Tim Porter
I’m a Canadian artist, born by accident in Washington, D.C. My inspirations come mostly from childhood memories and nightmares of growing up in America in the 1950s.

How did you get into the arts?
I had to drop out of University because of the war in Vietnam, and then I needed to learn a trade quickly to support myself. I took a ‘crash course’ in photography and just got started.
What’s the one film you never get bored of?
Apocalypse Now (1979) Directed by Francis Ford Coppola.
Who do you aspire to be like and who inspires you in the past/ present?
In the future, simply I aspire to become a more authentic me. I’m most inspired by the great English explorer, linguist and Orientalist Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890).

Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now?
Making movies, I hope. And on film, not digitally!
What advice would you give to someone trying to get into modelling or movies?
Show up early, never give up and don’t trust anybody under 30.
What’s been the most interesting thing you’ve learned about Japan so far?
There’s no “real” Japan – only real Japanese.

What do you miss most about Home?
Affordable maple syrup.
What’s the one item you cant live without?
The one thing would be tofu.
Could you tell us 5 amazing things to do to keep busy or entertained in Japan?
The most amazing thing of all is being here.
